Advances in Pain Management - Good News for Patients

- Thursday, February 07, 2013

Pain management is a vastly growing sector of medicine. More minimally invasive treatments are becoming available and pain management specialists are focusing on treating the cause of pain instead of just the symptoms using drugs. The physicians at The Franklin Pain and Wellness Center have seen the value of procedures for a long time. They realize that treating the pain symptoms using only prescribed pain meds is not a long term solution.

The specialists at The Franklin Pain Center offer various pain management procedures. Drs. Do Chan and Boris Shwartzman have been performing the Kyphoplasty procedure for a number of years. Kyphoplasty treats spinal fractures caused by osteoporosis without surgery. Kyphoplasty involves a small incision that a hollow tube can be inserted through. A balloon is then put through the tube right into the place of the fractured vertebrae and inflated while inside. The balloon is then filled with a cast material which fixes the collapsed vertebrae. This is a two hour procedure and the patient goes home the same day.

Another high tech and minimally invasive procedure is the MILD procedure. The MILD procedure treats lower back pain caused by Lumbar Spinal Stenosis. This is another short procedure that requires very little recovery time. Some patients who previously had a hard time walking, even get up and walk much easier and without pain right after the procedure. A small incision is made in the lower back, and instruments are used to remove excess bone and ligament that has formed in the spinal canal. The incision is the size of a baby aspirin and there are no stiches required.

These types of advances in pain management are great solutions for people suffering from chronic pain. If pain is affecting your daily life, contact The Franklin Pain and Wellness Center for an evaluation.
