NBC 10 recently covered a unique story about Drs. Boris Shwartzman and Do Chan. The most common question posed to doctors is: “What would you do if it was your mom?” Well, Drs. Boris Shwartzman and Do Chan actually answered that question not only with words, but also actions. In October of 2012 Slava Schwartzman fell in the middle of the night and suffered a spinal fracture. Dr. Boris Shwartzman, her son, asked his partner at The Franklin Pain and Wellness Center, Dr. Do Chan, to perform balloon Kyphoplasty on Slava to correct the problem. Ironically, a few weeks before Mother’s day this year, Dr. Chan’s mother also experienced a similar spinal fracture and it was time for Dr. Shwartzman to return the favor. Both procedures went well and provided major relief to the mothers of these two doctors. Watch the story covered by NBC here
Balloon Kyphoplasty is a minimally-invasive procedure that treats spine fractures most commonly caused by osteoporosis. It is designed to provide rapid back pain relief and help straighten the spine. Through a half-inch incision, small instruments are placed into the fractured vertebral body to create a working channel. The KyphX Inflatable ballon is then placed into the fracture and inflated, creating a cavity that is filled with bone cement to stabilize the fracture. This stabilizes the vertebral body and provides rapid mobility and pain relief. This minimally invasive procedure takes about2 hours and the patient is released the same day. Pain relief is usually immediate and downtime is only a couple of days.
