Common in amputees, phantom limb pain is perceived to be coming from a missing limb. This is different from stump pain in that it isn’t a result of overuse or tightly fitting prosthesis. Phantom limb pain is believed to be caused by the reorganization of neural pathways in the brain after an amputation.
Treatments for phantom limb pain can range from visual and thought exercises to a high tech procedure called spinal cord stimulation. This procedure uses a small implanted device to generate tiny electrical pulses that replace the feeling of pain with a tingling or massaging sensation.
To find out if spinal cord stimulation would be a good solution to your pain, schedule a consultation with one of our pain specialists. Our specialists are trained in the latest high tech pain procedures and will work with you to create a solution that best fits your needs.
